I wrote a post some time ago on Water Housing for Surf Photography. It was brought to my attention that I had a few mix up on links and names. I have fixed them now and hope to send traffic to the right places.

I had the wrong info for Dale Kobetich who builds custom water housings. I have heard only good things about his housings. You can check out his work here.

Other News
I am in the process of ending this blog. The good news is that I am going to focus just on the Official TidalStock Blog. There will be more posts on a regular schedule. New photos, surf photography tips, and other great stuff. So stay tuned as we get ready for the switch.

Look for new posts starting this February. Go to www.tidalstock.com/blog/

Thanks.....

One post a Month....

ya I know it has been a while....these blogs are cool but then you get too many and forget to update and blah blah blah...Anyway things have been great....with the fun little south swells we have had, I have finally satisfied my surf itch. Before that I think I was blogging more than I was surfing.

We added a new photographer on TidalStock, Tracey Tomtene. She is a great photographer living in Canada. She has a unique style, which is different from our other photographers, but we really like that about her work. Here is her bio.

Tracey Tomtene has grown up and lived in various parts of Western Canada and also made temporary homes abroad in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Although she studied Business in university, all of her electives were filled with Fine Arts. It was not until she took a black and white darkroom photography course that her predestined craft would reveal itself. That was six years ago. Ever since, she has honed her techniques through the course of her travels using both traditional and digital photography equipment. Her and her camera have traveled far from home to the south east of Asia, Hawaii, New York, all the way back to her father’s farm in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, Canada. She currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Soooo what I have I been up to???
I have been working on some video/photography production with my cousin Erin Edwards. She was a former professional surfer now works for Fuel TV and is a published writer. So we have been doing some stuff for their website, and some personal projects as well. It has been a fun change of scenery doing the video stuff. A lot of photographers like Chase Jarvis and Vincent Laforet think that the lines between video and photography will get smaller, especially now with the new cameras coming out that have full 1080p video. Anyway we have a bunch of ideas in the works and we hope to produce some cool stuff. In our latest ventures we intervened Nathaniel Curran and attended the Life Rolls On, Jesse's Story movie premier. Look for more Athlete Interviews, events, and maybe even some how to photography videos.....

Here is some footage and photos from the Nathaniel Curran interview...

Sharks on my mind!!!

Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias)There has been a lot of talk about sharks on the various websites I surf each morning. I am not sure if it is a slow news day or attacks are becoming more frequent. I never really worry about sharks when I am out there surfing or taking photos but it is always in the back of my mind.

Noah Schultz one of TidalStock's submitting photographers has been uploading some amazing new photos including some shark photos.

The photo above is a Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) and man do they look scarry underwater. See more of Noah's work on TidalStock.com and check his bio out here.

National Geographic Kids Magazine

Well it is out, the February 2009 National Geographic Kids Magazine. I am happy with the results and it is pretty cool to be published in that magazine. They ran a photo of Tillman the Skateboarding Dog (yes he is quite the popular dog). Ron, Tillman's owner was nice enough to let me take photos of Tillman so I owe a big thank you to him. Watch out for more of Tillman and rumor has it that he has a new baby sister. Check out Tillman's website here.

As the whole world knows now, there is a big swell heading for California. BIG WAVES! I think I will be taking a little road trip to photograph all the action (hype). If I get anything good it will be on here. Have fun and be safe....It might not be huge out there but this swell is supposed to have a lot of power.

Welcome Photographer Grey Lockwood to the TidalStock Team!

We are proud to announce that photographer Grey Lockwood is on the TidalStock Team. He has amazing surf and travel images from all over the world. We are really excited to license his imagery, the response with buyers has been fantastic so far. So I sat down with Grey and asked him some questions. Enjoy!!!

Age?
28

Where are you from?
San Diego, Ca.

How did you get into photography?
Started shooting teamriders while working at Emerald City Surf n Sport in Mission Beach, Ca.

What was your first camera?
Canon AE-1

School or Self taught?
Self taught in surf photography, went to Brooks Institute for Commercial Advertising.

Best thing about being a photographer?
My schedule. Photography gives me the option to work and travel when and where I want, I was never a 9-5 type of person.

Worst thing?
The amount of time and money that can go into shooting gets a little ridiculous sometimes. But, when you finally create an image that you've dreamed about for so long it makes it all worth it.

Film or Digital?
I shoot both film and digital. Digitally, I shoot with a Canon 5D and 1Ds Mark II. When shooting film I use a Mamiya RZ 6X7.

Any crazy moments while doing surf photography or any photography?
There are too many moments to list, most happen while traveling with surfers, those guys can get pretty crazy.

Favorite photo of yours?
GL00028 on the tidal stock site.

Pizza or Mexican food?
I think I could eat Carne Asada burritos for every meal for the rest of my life, I'm totally addicted.

List clients or where you have been published?
Editorial - Surfer, Mundorad, Sundance Channel, San Diego Tribune, Deep.
Advertising - Volcom, Rip Curl, Oneill, SexWax, Infinity Surfboards.

Any tips you can offer to someone that want to be a photographer?
There are two things I always tell people. It doesn't take the best camera gear to create amazing images, some of my all time favorite personal photographs were shot on a $100 TLR from 1955. Second, study every image you see and try to figure out the lighting, camera, lens choice, and location. It's more than pointing your camera at something and pressing the shutter button, the best photographers in the world didn't get to that point without years of hard work.

PC or Mac?
MAC for life, PC's are paperweights as far as I'm concerned.

Surf photography tips?
Find surfers who are willing to work with you to create images, only shoot when the light is good, and plan on living out of a suitcase for a better part of your life.

Are you a surfer?
Yes, I have been surfing for 23 years. I caught my first wave in 1985 at San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente, Ca.

Favorite wave?
My favorite wave in California will always be 1st Point Malibu. My favorite wave in the world is Snapper Rocks in Australia.

Other sports or hobbies?
There isn't much time for anything else, plus I still love cruising around with my cameras and spending time alone finding new parts of the world. Always keep your eyes open...

What do you have more of cameras or surfboards?
Definitely Cameras! I have a pretty minimal surfboard quiver (2 longboards, a 7'2" single fin, and a 5'4" TwinFIn)

Favorite surfer?
Rob Machado, Joel Tudor, and anyone else who truly understands the art of surfboard riding.

Website, blogs etc?
www.greylockwoodphoto.com and greylockwoodphoto.blogspot.com

And you can license his imagery at TidalStock.com keyword Grey Lockwood.

I know it has been a while!!!

Happy New Year!!!!

Wow 2009 already. Time flies, I feel like I was just getting started for 2008. Anyway sorry for the lack of posting, one of my resolutions is to update this blog on a regular basis.

We have a lot of things in the works for 2009 for TidalStock and Ryan Cardone Photography. We are working on a new landing page for TidalStock that we are really excited about. It will be cleaner and have cool new features. Also we hope it spotlights our Team of photographers more. We are adding some amazing new photographers and we really want to make the site about them and their work. So check out the site and let us know what you think.

We have hit the ground running in 2009 with a few cool tear sheets. We are published in the January 2009 Playboy issue. No not what you think. They used two shots of Tillman the Skateboarding Bulldog that I shot. See below. You might have seen Tillman at the Rose Parade this year skateboarding on the float, pretty cool stuff.

Also it should be out any day now, I will be published in National Geographic Kids Magazine. Now I think most photographer's dream is to be published in National Geographic (me included). Well I got the same company, I am pretty happy. That is all I am going to say because the issue is not out yet and I don't want to get in trouble. It will be in the February 2009 issue.

So we are off to a good start and we are looking forward to a great 2009

Now a little shout out to my family.
My cousin Erin Edwards in doing some cool work over at Fuel TV. Check her blog out, she just got back from Hawaii and has some cool stuff on there.

Have a great one.........

Natural Balance Pet Foods

Tillman, skateboarding
I did a job for Natural Balance Pets Foods the other day. They are entering a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Both Tillman and Tyson the skateboarding bulldogs will be skateboarding on the float, how awesome is that! The float is so cool and I can't wait to see it when it's all done.

Also my photos of Tillman are going to be published in some pretty big magazines coming up. Keep a look out for them...
